Clients and engagements
The client list
Find a client, read the client list and open a client record.
A client is a business or a person your firm acts for. Engagements, tasks, documents, time and invoices all belong to a client somewhere up the chain. This article shows you how to find a client, read the list, and open a client's record.
Before you start
- You need permission to view clients. If Clients is missing from the menu, ask a firm administrator.
- Adding a client is a separate process. See Adding a client.
Steps at a glance
Step 01
Open the client list
Select Clients in the menu, or go to Clients. Each row shows the client ID, name, kind, jurisdiction, currency, status and the account manager.
The client list. 1: New client. 2: View the drafts, shown only when a client is part-way through being added. 3: the status filters. Step 02
Narrow the list
Choose All, Active or Inactive above the table. Use Kind and Jurisdiction to filter further, or type a name or client ID into Search clients.... Export downloads the list you are looking at.
You can also search for a client from the search box in the top bar on any screen.
Step 03
Open a client's record
Select a client's name. The record opens with the list on the left, so you can move between clients without going back.
The tabs across the record hold the detail: Details, Ownership, Compliance, Documents, Billing and Staff. Some tabs appear only when they apply: Engagements appears when the client does not have exactly one live engagement (with one, a View engagement link appears instead), Billing needs permission to view billing, and Trading partners appears only for a client connected to Orin OS.
A client's record. 1: the tabs that hold the record's detail. Compliance holds the client's anti-money laundering record: the acceptance record, the AML reviews that recur, the latest screening and the identity checks. See AML reviews and re-screens and Identity checks.
Jurisdiction, legal structure and billing currency are locked on the record. The currency follows the jurisdiction: Ireland bills in euro, the United Kingdom in pounds. You do not pick it.
After changing a field on Details, select Save changes at the foot of the record, or Discard to undo.
Step 04
Pick up an unfinished client
A client somebody started adding and did not finish is a draft. Drafts are not in the list; the count beside Clients in the menu and the banner above the list say how many there are. Select View the drafts, then Continue beside the one you want.
What success looks like
The client's record is open and the tabs show its engagements, documents and billing. The status badge under the name reads Active for a client you can work for.
Next steps
- Engagements and periods: agree what you will do for the client.
- Adding a client: take on a new client.
Common questions
A client is missing from the list. Check the status filter first. Active hides inactive clients, and drafts are never in the list until they are accepted.
Can I delete a client? No. A client with history keeps its invoices and logged time, so it is made inactive instead. Use Deactivate on the record or in the row's menu. Orin refuses if something still depends on the client and says what.
Can I change a client's currency? Not directly. The currency comes from the jurisdiction, which is locked once the client is accepted.
