Logging time
Where to log hours from, and what billable actually means.
Time is always logged against a task, which is what ties it to an engagement and a client, and therefore to an invoice.
Where from
- From the task, wherever you are looking at it.
- From My Workspace, without opening the task.
- With the running clock. When a timer is running, a pill appears in the top bar and stays there across every screen until you stop it.
The pill appearing is the signal. There is no timer control sitting in the header doing nothing when no clock is running, so if you see it, something is being counted.
Billable and non-billable
Billable time is work the client can be charged for. Non-billable is real work that is not chargeable: internal meetings, training, writing off an overrun.
Non-billable is not the same as not worth logging. It is how your firm learns what a client actually costs to serve, which is the number behind next year's fee.
Common questions
I worked on something with no task. Raise one. Time with nothing to attach to cannot reach an invoice and cannot be reported on.
I logged time to the wrong task. Edit the entry while the week is still yours. Once the week is submitted, ask your approver to send it back.
