Work in progress is billable time that has been logged and not yet put on an invoice. It is money your firm is owed by its own record-keeping rather than by any client.
How to read it
Group by client, engagement or person. The column that matters is age, not amount.
Old work in progress is worth less than new. A client will query a two-hundred-pound line from four months ago far harder than the same line from last week, because they no longer remember the work.
Common questions
Why is this bigger than I expect? Look for engagements that are on hold. Held work keeps accruing time and stops being invoiced, which is exactly what a hold means and exactly how a surprise builds.
Someone's figure is zero. Either they log no billable time, or their work has all been invoiced. The Time analysis report separates those two.
