Work in progress

Billable time nobody has invoiced yet, by task, with its value and how long it has been waiting.

Updated ReportsLast checked

The question it answers: what have we earned and not yet invoiced? Work in progress is billable time that has been logged and is not yet on an invoice, with its value and how long it has been waiting.

Before you start

  • You need permission to see timesheets. Seeing the whole business, rather than your own work, needs permission to approve timesheets.
  • This report is part of plans with advanced reports. Without it, the page shows an upgrade prompt.

Steps at a glance

Read the report

  1. Step 01

    Open the report

Select Reports in the menu, then Work in progress under Money and time.

The Reports page with the Work in progress card marked
1: Work in progress on the Reports page.
  2. Step 02

    Choose whose work

Use Mine and Firm at the right of the toolbar. Above the table, three figures sum what is listed: Unbilled hours, Unbilled value and Oldest unbilled day. If some hours have no rate, a red line under the value says how many. In the demo business the firm view shows 165 hours worth €14,025, the oldest 323 days old.

Narrow the list with the Client and Engagement filters or the search box, and select Export to download it.

  3. Step 03

    Read the age

Each row is a task with its client, engagement, unbilled Hours, Value and Age, the number of days since its oldest unbilled hour. The list opens oldest first.

The work in progress table listing tasks with hours, value and age in days
Unbilled work by task, oldest first.

Old work in progress is harder to bill than new. A client will question a line from four months ago far more than the same line from last week.

When you have what you need

Work leaves this report when its time is added to an invoice, including a draft. To bill it, see Billing and invoices.

Common questions

Why is this bigger than I expect? Look for clients on hold on the Billing page, and for time that has been logged but not approved. Both keep work here.

Someone's work is missing. Either it is not billable, it has been invoiced, or you are looking at Mine. Time analysis separates billable from non-billable hours.

The value is a dash or says No rates set. The hours carry no rate. See Hourly rates.
