Online payments with Stripe
Connect a Stripe account so clients can pay your invoices by card, and what each connection status means.
Connect a Stripe account so clients can pay your invoices by card, straight into your own account. Clients pay on Stripe's own page, from the invoice email or their portal. Orin never sees a card and takes no fee; Stripe charges its own.
This used to be called Integrations. It is now Online payments, under the Practice tab of Settings.
For people who manage billing
Opening this page, connecting and disconnecting all need permission to manage billing. Stripe is connected once for the whole business; members do not connect their own.
Before you start
- Decide whether to create a new Stripe account or connect one you already have.
- If the page says Online payments are not switched on for Orin OS yet, so there is nothing to connect, there is nothing you can do here yet.
Connecting Stripe
Step 01
Open Online payments
Go to Settings, choose the Practice tab at the top, then Online payments.
Online payments in the demo business, where card payments are not switched on. Step 02
Start the connection
While the status reads Not connected, choose Create a Stripe account or Connect an existing Stripe account. Either takes you to Stripe to finish.
Step 03
Finish on Stripe and come back
When you return, a message tells you how it went. Your Stripe account is connected. means you are done. If you stopped on Stripe, nothing was connected. If the Stripe page expired, start again from this page.
The connection steps above are written from the screen's own wording and were not run against Stripe for this article.
What each status means
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Connected, taking payments | Invoice emails carry a Pay this invoice online button while something is left to pay, and clients can pay from their portal. A payment shows on the invoice as Online (Stripe) once Stripe confirms it. |
| Connected, Stripe needs more details | Stripe wants more information before clients can pay you. Until then, invoice emails carry no Pay button. Finish in Stripe, or press Finish setting up on Stripe if Orin created the account. |
| Not connected | Clients cannot pay online. Pay links already emailed say you do not take online payments. |
Disconnecting
Press Disconnect Stripe and confirm with Disconnect. Clients can no longer pay you online. Your Stripe account, and the money in it, stay yours.
Next steps
- See how payments are recorded in Getting paid.
- Raise invoices in Billing and invoices.
Common questions
A client paid online and it has not appeared.
The payment shows once Stripe confirms it, which is not always instant. Check your Stripe dashboard before recording the payment by hand, or you will record it twice.
How do I refund a card payment?
Make the refund in Stripe. Then remove that payment from the invoice in Orin, so the invoice shows what is still owed.
The Stripe account is already used by another business.
A Stripe account can be connected to only one business on Orin OS, so it was not connected here.
